Cosmetics: Localized Terminology

Culture and Language in Translation

Localization

This multinational cosmetics company selected TransLingua to translate all of their new marketing material, product packaging, and labels into French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Dutch. We assembled teams of native-speaking linguists with extensive experience in the cosmetics industry to ensure that the most appropriate terminology was used across all components of the project.

Accurate Language

We consistently met this client’s deadlines with flawless translations that reflect the nuances of terms like “silky smooth” and “gently exfoliate” with wording that is both consistent with the original and familiar in the target markets.

Energy: Natural Resources

CONFERENCE INTERPRETING AND TRANSLATION

DIVERSE LANGUAGES

A non-profit organization turned to TransLingua for interpretation services for an international conference in New York City. The organization welcomed participants from a host of countries, including Azerbaijan, Canada, China, Ivory Coast, Ecuador, Georgia, Ghana, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Mexico, Mozambique, Papua New Guinea, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uganda.

MEETING ALL OUR CLIENT’S NEEDS

The topic of the conference was the management of oil, gas, and mineral resources. Not only was TransLingua able to meet all their interpretation needs–simultaneous interpreters, interpretation booths and headsets–but also translated hundreds of pages of conference materials, using linguists who had in-depth knowledge of the field. Furthermore, we provided consecutive interpreters for accompanying spouses during the conference to facilitate their stay in New York.

Financial: Multicultural Markets

A GROWING RELIANCE ON TRANSLINGUA

TRANSLATIONS FOR THE US

For over a decade, we have been under contract to provide translations for one of the largest banks headquartered in the US. The client was early to realize the importance of communicating with its clients in their native language–even though those clients live in the US. Initially, the client focused on Spanish, Chinese, and Korean.

CUSTOMIZING OUR PROCESS

Our client recognized the need for consistent, professional translation services and contracted with us to provide ongoing translations for one division–at the outset–to test the arrangement. The key to providing these translations was submitting back-translations to the bank’s legal department. Back-translations are not easy to work with because they do not always reflect the essence, tone, or style of the translation. Further, if you imagine a language that is character, rather than word based, or a language that has no neutral gender (everything is feminine or masculine) you have some idea of the challenges this presented.

EXPANDING OUR SERVICES

Our team worked with the bank’s legal department, providing them with detailed explanations of the back-translation process and of why we made certain choices. Further, we worked directly with them and their company reviewers to forge solutions that met their specific needs. Our process turned out to be so effective for the bank, today TransLingua is providing translations for over ten divisions across the US in many more languages.

Legal Translation: Customized Solutions

KOREAN AND JAPANESE TO ENGLISH

DEVELOPING A STRATEGY

One of the world’s leading law firms needed to have a massive number of documents translated from Korean and Japanese into English for a fast-approaching court case. Cartons of documents had been sent over by the firm’s client, an electronics manufacturer. Rather than simply provide an estimate for translating everything, our project manager went over to the firm’s office to assess the scope of the work. They had a limited time frame and further, it was not clear that all the documents would need to be translated.

REDUCING COSTS

We assembled a team of Korean and Japanese linguists to work at the law firm’s New York office. These linguists had extensive knowledge of both the legal and electronics fields. In less than five days, they were able to summarize every single document so the attorneys could decide what material would require translation. Based on our summary, the firm determined that more than half of the documents would not need to be translated. Having reduced the size of the project by over 50%, we translated, edited, proofread, and certified the remaining documents for use in court–in time to meet the client’s deadline and at considerable cost savings.

Management Consulting: Multinational Surveys

RUSH TRANSLATION INTO 24 LANGUAGES

FIRM DEADLINE

A global consulting firm was conducting an employee satisfaction survey for a multinational corporation–in 20 countries and 24 languages. They had a very tight deadline: 2 days for translation and adaptation into all languages, 1 day for in-country client review, and 2 days for reconciling all reviews and translations. We examined the material to be translated for both print and online survey administration, clarified issues such as localization for different countries/regions, and assembled skilled translation teams.

POSITIVE FEEDBACK

TransLingua delivered high quality translations within 2 business days to in-country reviewers, who were able to quickly approve the translations and begin the survey on schedule. Our client got compliments from end users all over the world, including Europe, South America, Japan, China, Vietnam, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

Media: Documentary on Rwanda

TRANSLATION AND SUBTITLES

PROVIDING THE RIGHT SERVICE

A television network in the US was producing a documentary on Rwanda. They had collected hours of video recordings in Kinyarwandan. In order to create the documentary, they needed to know what was being said in each of the recordings. They needed to edit their footage down to a one-hour documentary and include all the relevant material. Put simply, they wanted all the material summarized verbally on the spot. This was neither an interpreting nor a translation project in the formal sense. It combined elements of both and required linguists who were familiar with the political and social context of that country.

WORKING ON-SITE

Given the timeline, our project managers worked quickly to come up with a successful solution. They selected a team of native-speaking linguists who were currently in the US and sent them to the studio to work with the production team. They reviewed and explained the contents of the video material. By highlighting specific subject matter, our linguists were able to help the production team put the documentary together, ensuring that all the important material was included.

Medical: Critical Communication

TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETATION

KNOWING YOUR CLIENT

We have been providing language services to one of the nation’s leading medical centers for many years. Having developed an in-depth knowledge of the hospital’s operations and culture, our project managers had set up processes for providing translations and interpreters on a moment’s notice. They came to rely on us not only for our language skills, but also for our knowledge of diverse cultures: when is it appropriate to have other family members present? When is it appropriate to provide information that might conflict with traditions and customs? When is it appropriate to send a female rather than a male interpreter?

BENEFITS OF PARTNERING

TransLingua is available to consult with all hospital staff members from medical personnel to social workers and admissions, nutrition, and billing personnel. This relationship-based service opportunity means that we both meet their deadlines and work within their cost structure–while fulfilling their communications needs.

Pharmaceutical: Creative Strategies

CULTURAL CONSULTING AND TRANSLATION

CURRENT KNOWLEDGE

Patient information brochures contain material that requires an in-depth background in pharmaceuticals, knowledge of FDA regulations, and understanding of local culture to ensure that the brand message is conveyed effectively. We translated and worked with our client to adapt design files in Arabic, Armenian, Chinese, French, German, Haitian Creole, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese for a drug that is widely used.

CULTURAL CONSULTATION

Once the translations were written, edited, and proofread, TransLingua took the original design and made recommendations on how the layout could be revised to work more successfully in target cultures. Together with the original design team, we helped to select images that would speak more clearly in each country.

DESIGN AND PRODUCTION SUPPORT

Further, our linguists worked with the client’s production team to accommodate the text changes that occur in translation. It is estimated that Spanish expands 25% beyond the original English; German does not use hyphenation. Imagine placing Japanese characters in a text box created originally for English. Working in 15 languages, we were able to produce first rate translations and maintain the original design standards while complying with FDA regulations, especially with regard to disclosure information–all in time to meet our client’s tight publication deadline.

Technology: Overcoming Obstacles

ONLINE MEDIA TRANSLATION

USING TECHNOLOGY IN NEW WAYS

A pioneer in online media approached TransLingua to provide web and online media localization services in Afrikaans, Arabic, Basque, Bislama, Bosnian, Catalan, Croatian, Georgian, Gujarati, Hebrew, Hindi, Kannada, Kirgiz, Macedonian, Malay, Slovenian, Tamil, Telugu, Thai, and Urdu. Our linguists logged onto our client’s interactive translation terminal, downloaded files, and translated them for a client review phase.

SKILLED RESOURCES

The challenge for us was to select linguists who could meet our linguistic standards and work from remote locations all over the world that did not always have reliable high speed internet access. Working with our client to meet the project’s technological needs, we were able to deliver successful translations in all languages–on schedule.

Art Translation Project: COCOON

Listen: Radio France International interview with Kate Browne [in English]

Translingua transcribed and translated 8 interviews and a few written testimonies from French into English for COCOON, a public space sculpture by Kate Browne. COCOON is a series of public space sculptures Kate Browne is building at sites around the world that have traumatic histories and conflicting narratives. In all locations she collaborates with local people who, in addition to building the large COCOON, also create a little Cocoon or symbolic object from the everyday things that they might find in their purse or pocket. She interviews and records each participant about what their cocoon represents. Their recorded testimony is heard inside the finished sculpture. Each participant poses for a portrait with their individual cocoon. For more details visit her website.

The interviews and testimonies that Translingua worked on came from COCOON participants who live and/or work in the Goutte d’Or neighborhood in Paris. They are immigrants or descendants from immigrant families mainly originating from North Africa (Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco) or West African nations.

Unfortunately, the neighborhood has a bad reputation and is often depicted as “dangerous,” by politicians and media alike. But behind this façade that has been built up by outsiders and perpetuated for their own political and economic gains, there is a vibrant and rich international community. Kate speaks with people from all walks of life, for example: a young man who grew up in a family from Mali – a total of 8 people living in a tight one-room apartment -, getting his education in the street; a West African grocery store owner who adjusts her prices according to the shoppers’ needs; and a representative of la Table Ouverte, a community café where the elderly of the neighborhood have access to healthy meals no matter what they can afford to pay. They all talk about their origins, the hardships their families had to overcome, the neighborhood, its history, demographics and how it has changed over the years, their lives in the neighborhood today and their hopes and aspirations for the future. At the end of each interview, they talk about their involvement in the COCOON public space sculpture project, what their contribution symbolizes and how it is connected to them and their neighborhood.

For the Translingua team of transcribers, translators and proofreaders, the COCOON project was a very rewarding experience, because it reflects our mission which is to build bridges between different cultures, communities and people by helping them communicate with each other. We are proud to have been a part of the COCOON project focusing on the Goutte d’Or neighborhood in Paris, France. Thank you, Kate, for involving us. We will continue to follow you and all your projects and wish you all the best!

Columbia University – Simultaneous Interpretation Services

Simultaneous Interpretation NYC

TransLingua is proud to announce their partnership with Columbia University’s Institute for Religion, Culture, & Public Life to provide simultaneous Arabic interpretation services. Rached Ghannouchi, leader of Tunisia’s Ennahdha Party, spoke on “Islam, Democracy, and the Future of the Muslim World” during a two hour presentation on October 1, 2014. The presentation was followed by a question and answer session with members of the audience.

Rached Ghannouchi is the co-founder and president of the Ennahdah Movement, an Islamist group that is currently Tunisia’s largest political party and the dominant participant in a coalition that has governed the country since the October 2011 elections. After spending more than two decades in exile for his political activism, Ghannouchi returned to Tunisia in January 2011 to participate in the country’s democratic transition. Widely recognized as one of the world’s most influential Islamic thinkers and a proponent of Islamic democracy and pluralism, he was named one of TIME’s one hundred most influential people in the world in 2012. That year, he also was awarded the Chatham House Prize (with Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki) for “the successful compromises each achieved during Tunisia’s democratic transition.”

Simultaneous Interpretation Services for Conferences in NYC
Simultaneous Interpretation in NYC

At Translingua, our goal is to provide translation, simultaneous interpretation, cultural branding, and linguistics in New York and Colorado for all purposes. We specialize in document translations, legal translations, and government translations and are capable of precisely interpreting over 100 languages.

Swahili Simultaneous Interpretation Services

With only one day left before an important conference about ending sexual violence against women, the Nobel Women’s Initiative faced a scheduling conflict when their Swahili Interpreter was forced to back out from the event. On March 18, 2014, The International Campaign to Stop Gender Violence in Conflict joined up with MADRE to review cases from Burma, Sudan, Haiti, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo where women’s action produced real results towards tackling rape and impunity. These cases have ultimately led to a worldwide government commitment to action against the atrocities that women face, and serve to inspire more progress towards ending sexual violence against women.

We offer a vast network of simultaneous interpretation services and translators in the Metro NYC area. TransLingua was able to provide a Swahili Interpreter with less than 24 hours of notice. In fact, we offer our services in over 100 worldwide languages and dialects. For last minute Interpretation and Translation Services in NYC, please call (212) 697-2020.
