Letter: Translation software can’t do a human’s job

The Gazette | March 26, 2013

Tony Butler is right when he says that language here in Quebec is an emotional issue, which is why I got all worked up when he suggested that using computer translation will solve some of the problems that have arisen lately (Letter: Language is an emotional issue, The Gazette,March 22). As a certified translator with a Master's in translation studies, I can assure you that this is not the case.

My favourite example: A friend used translation software to translate "face lift" in an article on plastic surgery, the result was "ascenseur du visage" ... an elevator for the face! A computer is still no substitute for a brain.
