NYC Immigration Document Translations

Immigration document translations are an essential part of your immigration application. When you submit documents to support your application, they must be translated into English before submission to avoid processing delays. TransLingua offers affordable, fully certified translation services for documents.

Why Do You Need Immigration Document Translation?

You will need the original document when you submit any documents to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If your original document is in a language other than English, you will also need a certified translated version. Failure to supply a certified transcription at the time of submission can cause significant delays and possible denial of your request. This is clarified in the Code of Federal Regulation (CFR):

"Any document containing foreign language submitted to USCIS shall be accompanied by a full English language translation which the translator has certified as complete and accurate, and by the translator's certification that he or she is competent to translate from the foreign language into English."

When TransLingua prepares your translated documents, you can be assured of professional, certified translations that meet the requirements of USCIS. We offer our clients translation services in more than 100 languages. Whether you need document translation services for a student, work, or immigration Visa, we can provide quality services to meet your needs.

I'm Bilingual -- Can I Translate My Own Documents?

Technically, yes. However, you must certify your own translations, which may cause delays in processing your application. Hiring a professional immigration document translation service like TransLingua will avoid delays or other processing hurdles.

For each non-English document submitted to USCIS, you need one copy of the original document and a translated copy. Each translation must be word-for-word and have a certification from the translator. You must submit all translated documents in typed format. The certification letter can be typed or handwritten, but a typed document is better.

The translation certification should use the following format and contain all noted information:

Immigration Document Certification

When you submit a birth certificate, it is better to submit the long-form version if possible. The reasoning is that the long form has more verifiable information, such as familial relationships. If available, using the long-form version in your submission may facilitate quicker processing.

Processing Timelines

The application process and submission of any paperwork through USCIS can be time-consuming. Every application may have different routing and processing requirements, so while one may fly through the system, another may seem stalled. Some of the factors that affect immigration document processing times include:

  • Where the applicant is from.
  • The applicant's relationship with the sponsor.
  • The current immigration status of the sponsor.
  • Which office is processing the application (field office, embassy, or consulate).
  • Whether any complications exist with the application.
  • How quickly the applicant responds to government inquiries for additional information.

To facilitate quicker processing of any documents, applicants should be as thorough as possible. Fill out all required immigration forms as completely as possible. Add "N/A" for non-applicable in sections that don't apply to your case rather than leaving blank entries. Include all requested documentation with appropriate translations and certifications.

To inquire about processing times, you can check the USCIS website. You can find general information regarding processing times on the U.S. Department of State website. To inquire about the current status of State Department processing, you may use their online request form.

Can I Use Google Translate?

No, please don't. While Google Translate is great for sorting out those Facebook posts or the occasional snippet you encounter on Twitter or other social media platforms, the accuracy is not good enough for document translation. USCIS will not accept documents translated using any online translation program (there are tell-tale signs).
